Four Kinds of Disciples
‘Jehovah Witnesses don’t believe in hell and neither do most
Chris琀椀ans.’ – Leonard Ravenhill.
A琀琀enders
Let us be clear. A true disciple knows
and loves the Lord, our Father God in
heaven. A true disciple knows Jesus,
God’s Son, who died on a cross to
forgive sin and rose from the grave.
A disciple for sure follows Jesus’s
teachings. A disciple loves their
neighbour and other people. A disciple
has fellowship with the Holy Spirit.
Disciples have had an encounter with
the living Jesus. They con琀椀nue to be
transformed to the likeness of Jesus. A
disciple is a disciple-making disciple.
morning, but does not know God.
This type of a琀琀ender is a churchgoer
and not a true disciple (yet) and is not
a Chris琀椀an (yet). From the age of six
un琀椀l seventeen years old, I was such
an a琀琀ender at a high Anglican church
every Sunday morning. I assisted
the priest at this church as a candle
boy and acolyte. But I did not know
Jesus and I never heard the gospel
proclaimed once in all those years.
I was lost in this church even though
there was much love and kindness
among the people there.
The a琀琀ender, witness, starter and
trainer are the four kinds of disciples
that par琀椀cipate in churches or
fellowships, small groups and Chris琀椀an
gatherings. The a琀琀ender o昀琀en serves
and 昀椀nancially gives but they do
not share the gospel and their faith,
neither do they train disciples or start
new groups. Small groups may consist
of several people or be one-to-one
gatherings. The a琀琀ender is present in a
service or mee琀椀ng for personal bene昀椀t
and may grow internally. However,
there is no kingdom growth. The
a琀琀ender does not launch out.
I was lost in this church.
There is another type of a琀琀ender. This
person a琀琀ends some kind of Chris琀椀an
gathering or church, o昀琀en on a Sunday
