W EEK LY WOR D FOR DAILY LIVING
It is God at work through human channels. The Holy Spirit
baptises with fire. It is revival.
Baptism of the Holy Spirit
These 120 disciples belonged to the Lord Jesus before the day
of Pentecost. They were reconciled to God, born again, thereby
converted and saved before Pentecost. It is by faith that they were
saved (secured eternal life) and that was not of their own good
works or merit. It was a gift of God (Ephesians 2:8).
It is unscriptural to suggest these 120 followers of Jesus were born
again on the day of Pentecost. Some have wrongly suggested that
these disciples had a born-again experience at the same time as
their baptism with the Holy Spirit. Revd Anthony Chamberlain,
in his excellent book The Promise of the Father, writes:
Jesus told His disciples that the Holy Spirit was already with
them. However, the Spirit had not yet been given the medium
into whom Christ Himself would baptise believers. The disciples
on the day of Pentecost were the first Christians to be baptised
in the Holy Spirit, therefore they set the pattern for us all: firstly,
born again, then secondly, baptised with the Spirit.2
Dr Martin Lloyd-Jones, a minister at Westminster Chapel,
London, stressed that the sealing of the Holy Spirit, which he
used interchangeably with the baptism of the Spirit, is a conscious
experience and most importantly that it follows conversion. Dr
R.T. Kendall succeeded Lloyd-Jones at Westminster Chapel, serving
25 years. In his book on the Holy Spirit called Holy Fire, he writes:
Dr Lloyd-Jones regarded the ‘sealing’ or ‘baptism of the Holy
Spirit’ as being the ‘highest form of assurance.’ It was a conscious
experience and something that follows saving faith.3
