INTRODUCTION
Myths Hurt People
Most people believe, and I have heard it said many times,
‘No one is indispensable.’ This saying or slogan is a myth. A
myth is a widely held but false notion. The apostle Paul,
writing to the Christians at Corinth, said the opposite to
the words in the slogan. Paul writes:
On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be
weaker are indispensable.
1 Corinthians 12:22
Those Christians in the body of Christ who seem to be
weaker are in fact indispensable. Indispensable people
are those who are absolutely necessary and vital with an
important part to play in the kingdom of God and lives
of others.
Many Christians believe, and I have sadly heard it preached
and spoken that ‘God hates divorce’. The slogan ‘God hates
divorce’ is supposed to be based on Malachi 2:16. The
slogan is a myth. It is a myth because it is based on an
incorrect translation in some Bibles of Malachi 2:16. We
shall identify and examine the true translation of Malachi
2:16. We shall also uncover what the Lord is saying in the
whole passage (Malachi 2:1-16) about divorce and what
was happening in the time of Malachi the prophet.
