arrive home at around 7pm or later. In the early years he worked a
six- or seven-day week at extremely busy times, such as Christmas.
My little mother worked in the family business helping produce
jackets. They both worked hard. My mother was never demanding
of us as children growing up. Kleo was kind and quiet.
He was able to look ahead – to plan
My father took pride in his work and always produced high-quality
jackets. He trained my mother how to sew handmade buttonholes.
This was highly skilled work and I remember him being very
particular that the buttonholes were of an excellent standard. My
father was self-employed and ran his own business all his life. He
was most happy when there was sufficient work. He was especially
pleased when my sister Helen (Eleni in Greek) got an excellent
job working at the Bank of Cyprus in London. He was relieved and
happy when I got my OND and later HNC in Engineering.
The family moved a few times within the Tufnell Park and Camden
Town area. I particularly remember the house at 15 Celia Road and
I could describe it to you in great detail. I remember those different
homes, areas and schools as a little boy with my younger sister
Helen. My sister and I were baptised (christened) as babies in the
Greek Orthodox Church.
Demetrakis – Ambitious and Determined
My father was ambitious and courageous. He wanted to do well for
himself, his wife and especially for his two darling little children.
Greek Cypriot parents absolutely adore their little children. My
father, right from his early years, wanted to better himself. To
provide an opportunity and environment where his children
would flourish. He was able to look ahead – to plan.
