My father could discern this woman was genuine and kind, and
she was a teacher, after all. Without any hesitation, my father
enthusiastically replied saying, “Take them. Thank you.” Mrs
O’Connell walked us to church for years. I believe she prayed for
us. I am glad my father was unlike most Greek Cypriot parents of
his generation who regarded the Anglican Church as not a proper
church compared with the Orthodox Church. My mother loved and
respected the church my sister and I attended.
We lived in that house in Ridgeview Road for decades. I lived in
that house from the age of about nine years old until I got married
at the age of 24 to lovely Annette.
I can see clearly now, God’s providence, plan and provision to move
to Whetstone. Immediately, I attended St John’s Junior School. I can
visualise the classrooms, playgrounds, the dinner hall, the morning
assemblies with music, and large Mr Spencer, the headmaster. I
especially remember Judith Allan. She was pretty and kind. Judith
was extremely clever. She had very neat handwriting. Anthony
Langstone lived in my road, and we were good friends whilst I was
at St John’s School.
